CAD – Kudlow says Trudeau is overreacting to NAFTA dispute, its just a “family quarrel”

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow speaking on the “Fox News Sunday” program

Says of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s response to the US imporsaition of steel tariifs late last week

  • On Thursday Trump said it was moving ahead with tariffs on aluminum and steel imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union
  • (there had been 2 month exemption in place)
  • Trudeau called the tariffs an affront to the longstanding security partnership between Canada and the United States
  • Announced retaliatory steps

On Sunday Trudeau said it was “insulting” to hear the U.S. claim that Canadian steel and aluminum posed a national security threat

Kudlow’s response:

  • “I think he’s overreacting”
  • said steel and aluminum tariffs on U.S. allies “may go on for a while” or “they may not”
  • the matter is subject to negotiation
  • “And that’s why I regard this as more of a family quarrel. This is a trade dispute, if you will. It can be solved if people work together,” Kudlow said. “To say that it is an attack on Canada is not right.”

Trudeau’s comments do not sound too encouraging for the CAD, on the other hand Kudlow’s response, while a little arrogant, is a bit more positive. But, its not really up to him is it? We await a random response from the tweeter in chief.
